MSRP Summer Option Application
Mentor list (suggested, not exclusive)
I. Purpose:
- To improve opportunities for medical students to pursue clinical, behavioral or basic research.
II. Scope of program:
- Awards will be made in accordance with availability of funds. Students will receive $4,000 stipend for participation in the 10-week summer program.
III. Selection criteria:
- The medical student is enrolled at UMMC and has just completed the M1 year.
- The medical student is in good academic standing.
- The medical student submits an application, which demonstrates his/her interest, aptitude and commitment for research. This will be reflected in a personal statement and may include prior research performed as an undergraduate student.
- The quality of the proposal will be judged by a committee of faculty scientists. Preference will be given to hypothesis-driven research in behavioral, clinical or basic science areas. IACUC or IRB approvals need to be in place prior to the summer. The student will also provide a statement of his/her career plans and motivation for the research.
- Mentor qualifications: Faculty members of the School of Medicine will be eligible as mentors. Mentor support (financial, time to supervise and teach the student, lab/office/computer space) and previous track record with students/trainees will be included in the evaluation. Further criteria for judging the mentor will be the number of papers published within the last five years, the number of papers and abstracts published with trainees or students, grant support of the mentor. There will be a limit of two students for each mentor per summer.
